The developers have improved the performance and responsiveness of the desktop, creating smoother animations for icons and scaling. The GNOME shell's initial setup wizard has been updated to feature more options on the first screen. The shell itself has been updated to version 3.32, with many graphical elements and operational mechanisms undergoing changes.
Additionally, the Tracker service has been enabled by default, which performs automatic file indexing and tracks recent file access. This is reminiscent of mechanisms in Windows and macOS.
The Linux kernel has been updated to version 5.0. This build adds support for AMD Radeon RX Vega and Intel Cannonlake GPUs, Raspberry Pi 3B/3B+ boards, and Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoCs. Support for USB 3.2 and Type-C has also been expanded, and energy consumption efficiency has improved. Other tools, including programming language compilers, the QEMU emulator, and all major client applications, have also been updated.
Kubuntu includes the KDE Plasma 5.15 shell and the KDE Applications 18.12.3 suite. It now uses double-clicking to open files and directories, though the typical Plasma behavior can be restored in settings. A minimal installation mode is also available for KDE Plasma, selected in the installer. This mode installs LibreOffice, Cantata, mpd, and some multimedia and networking applications. An email program is not included in this mode.
In Ubuntu Budgie, the desktop has been updated to Budgie 10.5. This build features a redesigned and reorganized desktop layout, a section for quickly installing snap packages, and the file manager Nautilus has been replaced with Nemo.
In Xubuntu and Lubuntu, the preparation of 32-bit builds has been discontinued, although repositories with packages for the i386 architecture remain available and supported. The base Xubuntu installation now includes GIMP, AptURL, LibreOffice Impress, and Draw.
Ubuntu MATE continues to operate with the MATE 1.20 desktop. Some fixes and improvements from MATE 1.22 have been integrated. The decision to stick with the older version is explained by potential compatibility issues with Debian 10. Therefore, to unify the packages with the 'ten', the old build was retained.
These are just the main changes and innovations of the version. It should be noted that the update can already be downloaded and installed; however, version 19.04 is not classified as LTS. In other words, this is practically a beta version, while 20.04, which will be released in a year, will be more stable.
