The State Corporation Roscosmos and the P.N. Lebedev Physical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences (FIAN) presented the project "Pulsar Music."
Pulsars are fast-rotating neutron stars of extremely high density. They have a rotation period and a specific modulation of the radiation arriving on Earth.
Pulsar signals can be used as time standards and guiding beacons for satellites, and by converting their frequency into sound waves, a unique kind of music can be produced. This 'melody' was created by Russian specialists.
To form the 'music,' data from the Spektr-R orbital telescope was used. This apparatus, in conjunction with ground-based radio telescopes, creates a radio interferometer with an ultra-large baseline — the basis of the international project "RadioAstron." The telescope was launched back in 2011. At the beginning of this year, a failure occurred on board the Spektr-R apparatus: the observatory stopped responding to commands. It should be noted that during its operation, the Spektr-R telescope has gathered an enormous amount of important scientific information. It is this data that allowed for the realization of the project "Pulsar Music." "Now everyone can learn how the cosmic 'orchestra' of 26 pulsars sounds, which were studied by Russian scientists based on data from the Spektr-R orbital telescope and the RadioAstron project," notes Roscosmos.
