According to CNBC, Huawei, the smartphone and networking equipment manufacturer, employs hundreds of thousands of people worldwide, and now the tech giant has opened its new campus in China to create a comfortable environment for even more collaboration.
The massive Huawei campus, named "Ox Horn," which can be literally translated as "Bull Horn," is located in southern China. Ox Horn is divided into 12 districts — or "cities" — each designed to mimic a different European city. The campus features an artificial lake, its own railway system, and ample space for 25,000 employees to live and work.
Although Huawei is known for its incredible secrecy, journalists were granted access to the new campus for the first time this year. Ox Horn is located in Dongguan, a city in Guangdong province, southern China. Dongguan is situated north of Shenzhen, where Huawei's headquarters is located. The Shenzhen campus is much larger than Ox Horn, accommodating 50,000 employees.
Ox Horn covers nine square kilometers and includes various facilities for production, offices, and employee housing.
At the factories, thousands of Huawei employees work on producing a vast array of the company's offerings. Huawei's products include smartphones, laptops, and professional networking equipment.
Huawei also offers cloud computing services and solutions. Therefore, there are several data centers on-site, ensuring round-the-clock access to the services rented from the company.
The non-industrial part of the Huawei campus is divided into 12 districts. Each district mimics one of the major European cities and can accommodate about 2,000 people.
The cities that inspired the campus architects include: Paris, Verona, Granada, and Bruges. CNBC noted that the campus even features a replica of the Liberty Bridge in Budapest.
Ox Horn is Huawei's most prominent project, best embodying the company's ambitions. Although the campus is already open and operational, it continues to expand. The company has not disclosed the cost of the project, which began construction back in 2015.
One of the most impressive features of the campus is the massive burgundy castle located by the artificial lake. The design of this castle was inspired by Heidelberg Castle in Germany. Bloomberg reports that the castle will house a secret research division of Huawei.
Like Ox Horn, Huawei's headquarters also has its own lake. It's unclear whether the lake built in the new campus will host black swans, which can be found on Huawei's campus in Shenzhen. According to CNBC, swans symbolize "constant dissatisfaction and a drive for growth and innovation" for the company.
To transport employees to their workplaces across the vast campus between the various "cities," Huawei has its own bright red train and a railway that surrounds the entire Ox Horn.
The campus is so large that it reportedly takes 22 minutes to make one loop around it on its own railway.
The campus is also equipped with visible security cameras. Huawei is known for keeping its business shrouded in secrecy—it's still unclear what the company is working on in its research lab in Shenzhen, nicknamed the 'White House,' and now it has also added the castle by the lake at Ox Horn.
