Tele2 has become the first Russian mobile operator to implement eSIM technology on its network: the system is already in pilot commercial operation and available to regular subscribers.
The eSIM technology, or embedded SIM, involves a special identification chip within the device that allows connection to the mobile operator without the need to install a physical SIM card.
It is reported that Tele2 implemented eSIM in two phases. First, the operator tested the 'electronic' SIM card on a group of employees. After successful trials, the company offered this high-tech solution to all clients of the 'big four' who have devices supporting eSIM.
Tele2 has already developed service business processes and provided eSIMs in its stores in Moscow and the surrounding area. The first 'electronic' SIM cards appeared in flagship retail outlets.
It is expected that eSIM will improve the quality of a number of customer services, speed up the service process, and expand capabilities for subscribers' devices. The technology allows the use of an additional SIM card in devices that support eSIM.
It is important to note that the implementation of the technology has been carried out in strict accordance with the requirements of the current legislation in the Russian Federation regarding security. All clients wishing to be the first users of eSIM in Russia must visit a Tele2 store with their passport to obtain a QR code, that is, an 'electronic' SIM card.
