Cisco Systems announced on Monday the start of the rollout of hardware supporting the next-generation Wi-Fi standards.
In particular, the company unveiled new access points and switches for enterprises supporting Wi-Fi 6, a new standard expected to be deployed by 2022. Phones, laptops, and other devices compatible with Wi-Fi 6 will be able to connect to Cisco access points in corporate campuses and transmit traffic to switches for further sending over wired networks.
In fact, Cisco joins many companies that are upgrading their hardware using new chips based on the Wi-Fi 802.11ax network standard. Wi-Fi 6 routers outperform Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) routers by four times in performance.
Wi-Fi 6 will provide a significant increase in overall network capacity and reliability, as well as enhance speed, performance, and capacity of wireless networks, both in homes and enterprises. Cisco noted that the rollout of the Internet of Things (IoT) means that we will have billions of devices connected to the Internet in the future, and network infrastructure must keep pace.
Next-generation Cisco Meraki and Catalyst access points, as well as Catalyst 9600 switches, are now available for pre-order. Before the launch of Wi-Fi 6 access points, Cisco conducted compatibility testing with Broadcom, Intel, and Samsung to address inevitable issues associated with the new standard. Samsung, Boingo, GlobalReach, Presidio, and other companies are expected to join the Cisco OpenRoaming project to tackle one of the most serious challenges in wireless access. The goal of this project is to simplify seamless and secure switching between mobile and Wi-Fi networks.
