Google has finally lifted the veil of secrecy surrounding the Fuchsia OS project — a mysterious operating system that has existed for about three years but has yet to be publicly released. It was first mentioned in August 2016 without an official announcement. Initial information appeared on GitHub, leading to theories that it is a universal OS that will replace Android and Chrome OS. This was supported by the source code, as well as the fact that two developers Fuchsia in the Android Studio emulator.
However, during the Google I/O conference, more information was disclosed. Senior Vice President of Android and Chrome Hiroshi Lockheimer a brief clarification on the matter.
‘We know that many are concerned that this will be a new Chrome OS or Android, but Fuchsia is not for that. The goal of the experimental Fuchsia is to work with various form factors, smart home gadgets, wearable electronics, and possibly augmented and virtual reality devices. Currently, Android works well on smartphones, and [Android] applications run on Chrome OS devices. Whereas Fuchsia can be optimized for other form factors,’ he stated. So for now, it's an experiment and not a replacement for existing systems. However, it is not ruled out that in the future the company will seek to expand the Fuchsia ecosystem.
Later, Lockheimer clarified a few more points on the topic. He noted that Fuchsia is essentially being developed for Internet of Things devices that require a new OS capable of adapting flexibly to tasks. Therefore, it can now be confidently said that Fuchsia is being created specifically for this area. It is likely that this way, the company aims to push Linux out of the market, which, to some extent, power nearly all embedded, network, and other hardware.
