A study conducted by Kaspersky Lab indicates that the intensity of distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks surged sharply in the first quarter of this year.
In particular, the number of DDoS attacks increased by 84% from the last quarter of 2018. Moreover, these attacks have become much longer in duration: the average length has increased by 4.21 times.
Experts also note that DDoS attack organizers are improving their techniques, which complicates such cyber campaigns.
China remains the leader in the number of outbound attacks. The largest number of botnets used for organizing attacks is located in the United States.
The highest number of DDoS attacks in the first quarter was recorded in the second half of March. The quietest period was January. Throughout the week, Saturday proved to be the most dangerous day in terms of DDoS attacks, while Sunday remains the calmest.
"The DDoS market is changing. New platforms selling tools and services for carrying them out have emerged, replacing those shut down by law enforcement. Attacks have become significantly longer, and many organizations have only implemented basic countermeasures, which are insufficient in this situation. It's hard to say whether the number of DDoS attacks will continue to rise, but it seems they won't become easier to execute. We advise organizations to prepare for repelling more complex DDoS attacks," the experts say.
