Elasticsearch B.V. new releases of the search, analytics, and data storage platform. These releases are notable for providing the ability to use security-related features for free.
The following are now available for free use:
- Components for encrypting traffic using the TLS protocol;
- Features for creating and managing users;
- Tools for selective access control based on roles (RBAC), allowing the segregation of user access to specific APIs and search indices.
Previously, these components were offered as part of a proprietary edition of the platform and were only available to paid subscribers with 'Gold' status. Now, these capabilities are included in the public builds offered as part of the 'Basic' set. However, these capabilities , despite the fact that their code was formally open a year ago (even though the code was available, the considered capabilities required a paid subscription and were not included in the 'Open Source' version).
Only basic security capabilities have been translated to free, while features such as single sign-on (SSO), authentication modules through Active Directory, Kerberos, SAML, and OpenID, as well as field- and document-level access control, remain paid.
The softening of the product distribution model has been undertaken after companies like Amazon, Expedia Group, and Netflix launched their fully open and free distribution '', suitable for use in enterprises and including to replace the advanced paid capabilities of the original proprietary edition of Elasticsearch. In addition to security features, Open Distro for Elasticsearch provides open components to support SQL, event tracking, notification generation, diagnostics, and cluster performance analysis. The latest release of Open Distro for Elasticsearch 0.9 is based on the core of Elasticsearch 6.7.1.
