Of course, we couldn't overlook solutions like the first laptop with AMD Ryzen and Acer (with Radeon RX Vega 56 graphics); however, the emergence of these mobile computers has mostly been a pleasant exception to the rule. But everything is changing this year!
Finally, gaming laptops based on mobile Ryzen chips and Radeon RX graphics have hit the shelves. One of the first is the ASUS TUF Gaming FX505DY, which uses a quad-core Ryzen 5 3550H and a 4GB version of Radeon RX 560X. It's very interesting to compare this device with other gaming systems that feature an Intel processor and mobile GeForce GTX 1050. That's exactly what we will do now.
Technical Specifications, Configuration and Software
You will find several versions of the ASUS TUF Gaming FX505DY for sale, but all models use the Ryzen 5 3550H processor and Radeon RX 560X graphics with 4GB of GDDR5 memory. The main specifications of the device are listed in the table below.

As far as I understand, the version of the TUF laptop that arrived at our editorial office is not the most high-end modification: it only has 8 GB of RAM, but it does include a 512 GB solid-state drive. Together with the pre-installed Windows 10 Home, this laptop costs 60,000 rubles. Interestingly, the model with "256 GB SSD + 1 TB HDD" but without the pre-installed operating system averages 55,000 rubles. I couldn't find other modifications of the ASUS TUF Gaming FX505DY in the Russian retail market at the time of writing this article.
All laptops in the TUF series based on the AMD platform are equipped with a Realtek 8821CE wireless module, which supports IEEE 802.11b/g/n/ac standards on both 2.4 and 5 GHz frequencies and Bluetooth 4.2.
The ASUS TUF FX505DY came with an external power adapter rated at 120 watts and weighing around 500 grams.
Appearance and input devices
The model under consideration looks very similar to the laptop tested last year. . It is no coincidence that the laptops share similar designations in their names. The red accents and 'jagged' pattern on the lid are definitely intended to attract younger audiences, as well as AMD fans. This design has been dubbed 'Red matter'. There is also a model available called 'Golden Steel'.
The laptop's casing is entirely made of plastic, which tries hard to resemble brushed aluminum. I have no complaints about the material quality or assembly, although the drawback present in the FX570UD model remains: the laptop lid "flexes" when pressed firmly.

By the way, the lid opens to about 135 degrees, making it convenient to use the device, even if it is placed on your lap. The hinges are quite stiff, allowing for a precise screen positioning that prevents it from wobbling during gaming sessions. At the same time, you can easily open the laptop lid with one hand.
However, the ASUS TUF Gaming FX505DY does appear more elegant than the FX570UD. This is largely due to the thin bezels that the Taiwanese company's marketers refer to as NanoEdge. Their thickness on the left and right sides is only 6.5 mm. On the top and bottom, however, it is noticeably thicker.
As for the rest, continuing with the size theme, the TUF Gaming FX505DY has fairly typical specifications: its thickness is just under 27 mm, and it weighs 2.2 kg without the external power supply.
The main interfaces of the TUF Gaming FX505DY are located on the left side. Here you will find a power connector, an RJ-45 for the Realtek gigabit controller, an HDMI output, one USB 2.0, and two USB 3.1 Gen1 (all three are Type A ports) and a 3.5mm jack for headphone connection. On the right side of the laptop, there is only a Kensington lock slot. In general, this set of ports is quite sufficient for comfortably playing your favorite games, although this topic can certainly be debated.
The keyboard in the TUF Gaming FX505DY is identical to that used in the previously tested model . It's called HyperStrike. Comparing the keyboards, you can notice that they share the same button sizes, as well as external elements like the border and the highlighted WASD block. In both cases, a fairly standard scissor mechanism common for gaming devices is used, requiring a specific force of 62 grams for key activation. The key travel measures 1.8 mm. The manufacturer claims that the keyboard can register any number of simultaneous key presses, with each key rated for 20 million presses. The entire keyboard features a three-level red backlight (but no RGB, unlike the ROG Strix SCAR II).
There are no serious complaints about the keyboard layout. For instance, the TUF Gaming FX505DY has large Ctrl and Shift keys, which are often used in shooters. Personally, I would have liked to have a larger Enter key, but you can get accustomed to the existing one in just a couple of days. The only inconvenience is with the arrow keys — they are traditionally very small in ASUS laptops.
The power button is located where it should be — away from the other keys. There are no additional buttons to control the volume of the speakers and microphone.
The device's webcam operates at a resolution of 720p at 30 Hz. As you might understand, the image quality of such a webcam is quite poor. If a blurry and noisy picture is acceptable for Skype calls, it is definitely not suitable for streaming on Twitch and YouTube.
Internal structure and upgrade capabilities
The laptop is quite easy to disassemble: unscrew 10 screws and remove the plastic bottom.
The cooling system consists of two fans and two heat pipes, with only one allocated for the central processor. Note that the TDP level of the Ryzen 5 3550H is 35W.
The test version of the TUF Gaming FX505DY is equipped with 8GB of DDR4-2400 RAM. The RAM is implemented as a single SK Hynix module, with the second SO-DIMM slot empty. The mobile Ryzen chips support an installation of up to 32GB of RAM.
The main and only storage device is the NVMe model Kingston RBUSNS81554P3512GJ with a capacity of 512GB. There is a spot for a 2.5-inch storage device, but in the case of our TUF Gaming FX505DY version, it remains empty.
