Google is implementing new privacy policies to enhance Chrome extensions

Currently, there are about 180,000 extensions available in the Chrome Web Store. Some of the extensions in the store collect user data without proper permissions. This will soon change, as Google begins to roll out new privacy policies for Chrome extensions. The company has announced that these rules will come into effect this fall. If an extension does not comply with the new privacy requirements, it will be removed from the Chrome Web Store.

In its announcement, Google emphasizes the need to comply with requirements stating that extensions should request access only to the data necessary for their functionality. If more than one permission can be used for the operation of an extension, developers must use the option that requires access to the least amount of information. With the enforcement of the new rules, this condition will become mandatory for all extensions in the Chrome Web Store.

Another change will concern the requirements for handling personal information. Developers of software products that process user messages and content will be required to provide a separate privacy policy, describing how data is processed and stored.

The company is confident that extensions should remain transparent regarding how they handle user data. More detailed information about the new privacy requirements is expected to be published later.
