Currently, both the SUSE company and the openSUSE project use the same logo, which causes confusion and distorted perceptions of the project among potential users. On the other hand, the SUSE and openSUSE projects are inextricably linked, especially after the transition to using base system packages, which highlights the similarities between the logos.
In addition to the overlap with the SUSE brand, there are also technical arguments in favor of changing the logo, such as the overly bright color for printing on a light background, poor scalability, and unsuitability for very small buttons. The logo becomes hard to read and loses recognition already at a size of 48×48. Moreover, there is a desire to create a logo that can identify the project without text, based solely on the image (currently, the icons for SUSE and openSUSE use the same image of a green chameleon).
The discussion also mentions the possibility of renaming the project to eliminate overlap with the 'SUSE' brand (similarly to how Fedora and CentOS are not tied to the Red Hat brand), to avoid confusion over letter casing in the name (instead of openSUSE, people often write OpenSUSE, OpenSuSe, etc.), and to consider the wishes of the Open Source Foundation regarding the term 'open'. In the first stage, the community is asked to decide whether to change the logo and name, after which discussions of potential options can begin.
The question of creating an independent organization, the openSUSE Foundation, is being considered, which would receive the new trademarks for the project. If the current logo and name are continued upon the establishment of the openSUSE Foundation, a special agreement regarding the rights to use the SUSE brand would be required.
