Creating an IPSec GRE tunnel between Mikrotik hEX S and Juniper SRX via USB Modem

The goal

It is necessary to organize a VPN Tunnel between two devices, such as Mikrotik and Juniper SRX series.

What we have

From the Mikrotiks, we selected a model from the Mikrotik wiki website that can support hardware encryption for IPSec; in our opinion, Mikrotik hEXS turned out to be quite compact and inexpensive.

The USB Modem was purchased from the nearest mobile operator, the model was Huawei E3370. No operations for unlocking from the operator were carried out. Everything is standard and flashed by the operator itself.

The core is equipped with the central router Juniper SRX240H.

What has been achieved

We managed to implement a working scheme that allows creating an IPsec connection through a mobile operator without having a static address, using a modem that wraps a GRE Tunnel.

This connection scheme is used and works on Beeline and Megafon USB modems.

The configuration is as follows:

The core is equipped with Juniper SRX240H
Local Address: 192.168.1.1/24
External Address: 1.1.1.1/30
GW: 1.1.1.2

Remote point

Mikrotik hEX S
Local Address: 192.168.152.1/24
External Address: Dynamic

Conclusions

After completing the work, we achieved stability. VPN Tunnel, from the remote network we have access to the entire network located behind Juniper, and vice versa.

I do not recommend using IKE2 in this scheme; there were situations where after rebooting one device or another, IPSec does not come up.
