Windows Insider builds with WSL2 (Windows Subsystem for Linux) have been released

Microsoft announced On the formation of new experimental builds of Windows Insider (build 18917), which include the previously announced layer WSL2 (Windows Subsystem for Linux), enabling the execution of Linux executable files within Windows. The second edition of WSL features a full Linux kernel instead of an emulator that dynamically translates Linux system calls into Windows system calls.

Using the native kernel allows for full compatibility with Linux at the system call level and provides seamless execution of Docker containers in Windows, as well as supports file systems based on the FUSE mechanism. Compared to WSL1, WSL2 significantly increases input/output performance and file system operations. For example, when unpacking a compressed archive, WSL2 is 20 times faster than WSL1, while performing operations like 'git clone', 'npm install', and 'apt update' and 'apt upgrade' are 2-5 times faster.

WSL2 offers a component based on the Linux kernel 4.19, which runs in a Windows environment using a virtual machine already applied in Azure. Updates for the Linux kernel are delivered through the Windows Update mechanism and are tested in Microsoft’s continuous integration infrastructure. All prepared changes for integrating the kernel with WSL promise to be published under the GPLv2 open-source license. The prepared patches include optimizations to reduce kernel startup time, decrease memory consumption, and retain only the minimal necessary set of drivers and subsystems in the kernel.

Support for the older version WSL1 is retained, and both systems can be used side by side depending on user preferences. WSL2 can serve as a transparent replacement for WSL1. As in WSL1, the user space components are executed separately and are based on builds from various distributions. For example, in the Microsoft Store the following builds are offered for installation in WSL Debian GNU/Linux, Kali Linux Ubuntu, Fedora, Alpine,
SUSE, openSUSE and The release of SEMMi Analytics 2.0.

Environment in a separate disk image (VHD) with an ext4 file system and a virtual network adapter. To interact with the Linux kernel provided in WSL2, a small initialization script must be included in the distribution, which modifies the boot process. A new command 'wsl --set-version' has been proposed to switch the operating modes of the distributions, and to select the default version of WSL, the command 'wsl --set-default-version' is available. Microsoft has announced the formation of new experimental builds of Windows.
