Department Head Desktop Company Red Hat Christian Schaller revealed on his blog the team's plans for the development of Wayland and the complete discontinuation of the X Window System (X, X11):

"As soon as we finish this (complete move away from the need for XWayland, editor's note), we plan to quickly transition X.org into a 'maintenance mode'. The reality is that X.org is mainly supported by us, and thus if we stop spending time on it, it is unlikely that new 'major' releases will be issued, and eventually, it may all fall into decline over time. We will keep an eye on this, as we want to ensure X.org remains supported until at least the end of the life cycle of RHEL8, and let this be a friendly wish to everyone relying on our work to support the Linux graphical stack: migrate to Wayland, it is the future."
Given that the standard support cycle of Red Hat is at least 10 years (more for an additional fee), X.org will therefore receive updates from the company throughout this time.
More interesting points in the article:
- The main goal is to completely eliminate the dependency on X so that the Gnome environment operates without XWayland (work is nearly complete). This will occur in the upcoming or the next major Gnome release (3.34 or 3.36).
- XWayland server will start on demand and shut down after the program that needed it exits.
- Work is underway to run graphical applications in XWayland from root.
- There is ongoing work to improve SDL library support in Wayland regarding screen scaling for low-resolution games.
- Support for hardware acceleration with Nvidia's proprietary driver for XWayland is finally complete (acceleration only worked with Wayland). "We are just waiting for approval from Nvidia."
