Developers from Mozilla the first public build of the updated Firefox Preview browser, which was previously known as Fenix. The new version will be released in the fall, but for now you can try the 'pilot' version of the app.
The new browser is positioned as a replacement and evolution of Firefox Focus. It's based on the same GeckoView engine but differs in other aspects. This update is almost twice as fast as previous versions of Firefox for Android. It features a refreshed minimalist design with a navigation bar at the bottom.
A new 'Collections' feature has been added, which will allow users to save, organize, and share collections of websites. It's something like an advanced version of 'Favorites' and bookmarks, but taken to a new level.
There's also stated protection against various tracking methods by default. The browser will block advertising trackers to speed up performance, save data, and keep user information hidden from website owners. By the way, the company promises to improve the browser by the end of the year and release a final build. However, work on Firefox Focus will be paused for now, although they promise to return to the program in the future.
That said, the browser still has some issues. The author tried to install it on an ASUS ze551ml. The installation went smoothly, but upon launch, the browser only stays on the screen for a couple of seconds before disappearing, although it doesn't close, as it is still listed among running applications. The reason for this behavior is unclear — possibly due to the lack of a proper version for x86 processors, or its 'unfriendliness' towards Android 6.
