After nine months of development release of the user environment , during which the Linux Mint distribution community develops a fork of the GNOME Shell, the Nautilus file manager, and the Mutter window manager, aimed at providing an environment in the classic GNOME 2 style with successful interaction elements from GNOME Shell. Cinnamon is based on GNOME components, but these components are delivered as a periodically synchronized fork, not associated with external dependencies on GNOME.
The new release of Cinnamon will be offered in the Linux Mint 19.2 distribution, which is planned to be released in the coming months. Installation packages will soon be prepared that can be installed in Linux Mint and Ubuntu from , without waiting for the new version of Linux Mint.

- New widgets have been added for creating configurators, simplifying the writing of setup dialogs and making their design more coherent and unified with the Cinnamon interface. The redesign of the mintMenu settings using the new widgets has allowed for a three-fold reduction in code size since one line of code is now sufficient for most options;
- In MintMenu, the search bar has been moved to the top. In the plugin for showing recently opened files, documents are now displayed first. The performance of the MintMenu component has significantly increased, starting twice as fast. The interface for menu settings has been completely rewritten to transition to the python-xapp API;
- In the Nemo file manager, the process of sharing folders via Samba has been simplified. Through the nemo-share plugin, package installation with
samba, placing the user in the sambashare group, and checking/changing access rights for the shared folder is provided without the need to manually perform these operations from the command line. The new release additionally adds settings for firewall rules, checks access rights not only on the folder itself but also on its contents, and handles situations where the home folder is stored on an encrypted partition (requests adding the 'force user' option). - Changes from the Metacity window manager, developed by the GNOME project, have been ported to the Muffin window manager. Work has been done to enhance the responsiveness of the interface and create a more lightweight window design. The performance of operations such as window grouping has been improved, and issues with lag during input have been resolved.
The method for applying VSync to combat tearing now does not require restarting Cinnamon. A section has been added to the settings to choose one of three VSync methods, providing options for optimal performance based on usage conditions and hardware. - A print applet has been added to the main components, which now launches by default.
- A review and simplification of some internal components have been conducted, such as DocInfo (handling recently opened documents) and AppSys (parsing application metadata, determining icons for applications, defining menu entries, etc.). Work has begun, but is not yet complete, on isolating applet handlers into separate processes.
