Debian community members are pleased to announce the release of the next stable version of the Debian operating system, Debian 10, codenamed buster.
This release includes more than 57703 packages, compiled for the following processor architectures:
- 32-bit PC (i386) and 64-bit PC (amd64)
- 64-bit ARM (arm64)
- ARM EABI (armel)
- ARMv7 (EABI hard-float ABI, armhf)
- MIPS (mips with big-endian byte order and mipsel with little-endian byte order)
- 64-bit MIPS with little-endian byte order (mips64el)
- 64-bit PowerPC with little-endian byte order (ppc64el)
- IBM System z (s390x)
In comparison to Debian 9 stretch, Debian 10 buster adds 13370 new packages, updates over 35532 packages (which is 62% of the stretch distribution). Additionally, for various reasons, many packages (over 7278, 13% of the stretch distribution) have been removed from the distribution.
Debian 10 buster comes with various desktop environments, such as GNOME 3.30, KDE Plasma 5.14, LXDE 10, LXQt 0.14, MATE 1.20, and Xfce 4.12. The repository also includes Cinnamon 3.8, Deepin DE 3.0, and various window managers.
Great attention was paid to enhancing the security of the distribution during this release preparation:
- The Debian installer has added support for booting with UEFI Secure Boot.
- The creation of encrypted partitions now uses the LUKS2 format.
- For new installations, Debian 10 has AppArmor application access control system support enabled by default. During installation, AppArmor profiles will only be loaded for a very limited number of applications; to add additional profiles, it is recommended to install the apparmor-profiles-extra package.
- The apt package manager has added an optional ability to isolate installed applications using the seccomp-BPF mechanism.
There are numerous other changes related to supporting new software and hardware features:
- The Linux kernel has been updated to version 4.19.
- The netfilter firewall management system has been changed from Iptables to Nftables. However, for those interested, the option to use Iptables via iptables-legacy has been preserved.
- Due to updates of CUPS to version 2.2.10 and cups-filters to version 1.21.6 in Debian 10 buster, printing is now supported without driver installation for modern IPP printers.
- Basic support for SOC-based systems, such as Allwinner A64.
- By default, the Gnome desktop environment uses a session based on the Wayland protocol. However, support for a session based on X11 has been preserved.
- New live images of Debian based on the LXQt desktop environment have been created by the Debia-live command. Additionally, a universal installer, Calamares, has been added to all Debian live images.
Changes have also occurred in the Debian installer. The syntax for automated installation files using answers has been modified, and the translation is available in 76 languages, fully in 39 of them.
As always, Debian fully supports upgrades from the previous stable release using the standard package manager apt.
Full support for the release of Debian 10 buster will continue throughout the entire period until the next stable release plus one year. Debian 9 stretch has been moved to the status of the previous stable release and will be supported by the Debian security team until July 6, 2020, after which it will be handed over to the LTS team for further limited support under Debian LTS.
