The essence is that this technology will allow bypassing content filtering restrictions imposed in the country. This accusation came from the Internet Services Providers Association (ISPAUK). The key point is that DoH sends DNS requests not over UDP, but via HTTPS, which makes them indistinguishable within regular traffic. Additionally, connections operate at the operating system level and among applications.
In the UK, operators are required to block sites with extremist material, child pornography, and similar content. However, the use of DoH will significantly complicate this task. Most operators oppose this technology, although British Telecom supports it.
Another nominee for the award is U.S. President Donald Trump for his trade war with China. The third contender is Article 13 of the EU Copyright Directive. According to this, social networks must implement content recognition technologies, which has caused outrage among many users and experts.
At the same time, Chinese specialists previously discovered the world's first malware that uses the DoH protocol to communicate with proxy server. It is called Godlua and acts as a DDoS bot for attacks. Experts believe that this system could seriously complicate the operations of network security tools since DoH requests are not visible in general traffic.
