Debian GNU/Hurd 2019 Release, Distribution Edition , combining the Debian software environment with the GNU/Hurd kernel. The Debian GNU/Hurd repository includes approximately 80% of the packages from the total size of the Debian archive, including ports of Firefox and Xfce 4.12.
Debian GNU/Hurd and Debian GNU/KFreeBSD are the only Debian platforms built on a non-Linux kernel. The GNU/Hurd platform is not among the officially supported architectures in Debian 10, thus the Debian GNU/Hurd 2019 release is issued separately and is classified as an unofficial Debian release. Ready-made builds, equipped with a specially created graphical installer, and packages are currently available only for the i386 architecture. GNU Hurd is a kernel developed as a replacement for the Unix kernel and presented as a set of servers operating on top of the GNU Mach microkernel, implementing various system services such as file systems, networking stack, and file access control systems. The GNU Mach microkernel provides an IPC mechanism used to organize interaction between Hurd components and build a distributed multi-server architecture.
In the new release:
- Added support for LLVM;
- Optional TCP/IP stack support implemented ;
- An ACPI translator has been added, currently used only for shutdown after the system has completed its tasks;
- A PCI bus arbiter has been introduced, which may be useful for properly managing access to the PCI;
- New optimizations have been added, affecting the protected resource attachment mode (protected payload, similar to capabilities in Linux), page memory swapping management, message dispatching, and gsync synchronization.
