Nintendo Switch emulation on PC has progressed faster than previous Nintendo platforms like the Wii U and 3DS, with the Yuzu emulator being introduced less than a year after the console's release (developed by the same team behind Citra, the Nintendo 3DS emulator). This is largely thanks to the NVIDIA Tegra platform, which is well-known to developers and fairly easy to emulate. Since then, Yuzu has managed to run games such as , , Pokémon Let’s Go, and others.
However, Cemu, the Nintendo Wii U emulator, still has a significant advantage over Yuzu — the capability to run Wii U games at much higher resolutions (4K and above) for enhanced image quality. But soon, Yuzu will have an AI-based resolution scaling feature.
This new tool multiplies the width and height of Render target textures based on a profile. This means that if the original Render target was 1920 × 1080 pixels, when doubled on each side, it would be 3840 × 2160 pixels. This enhances the clarity of the final image. Other emulators (Dolphin, Citra, Cemu, etc.) work similarly. The main difference with Yuzu is that a profile is required, since not all Render targets can be scaled (for example, some are used for rendering cube maps). Yuzu will include an AI resolution scanner that will determine which Render targets can be adjusted and which cannot, based on a set of rules.
On the BSoD Gaming channel on YouTube, this new feature has already been tested in collaboration with the Yuzu developers. The featured videos showcase attempts to run Super Mario Odyssey and other games at 8K resolution on a PC (i7-8700k @4.9 GHz, 16 GB DDR4 @3200 MHz, overclocked GeForce GTX 1080 Ti 11 GB, 256 GB NVME M.2 SSD). It is not specified when this innovation will be available to Yuzu subscribers on Patreon, but the future of Nintendo Switch emulation on PC looks promising.
