Quietly and unobtrusively, a minor release of Wire version 3.35 for Android has just taken place.
Wire is a free cross-platform messenger with E2EE by default (meaning all chats are secret), developed by Wire Swiss GmbH and distributed under GPLv3 (clients) and AGPLv3 licenses (server).
Currently, the messenger is centralized, but there are plans for future federation (see the blog post regarding the upcoming talk at BlackHat 2019) based on future IETF standards for Messaging Layer Security (MLS): architecture, the protocol, federation, developed in collaboration with employees from Google, INRIA, Mozilla, Twitter, Cisco, Facebook, and the University of Oxford.
Changes:
- A new implementation for sending and receiving files, images, etc.
- The group size limit has been increased to 500 users.
- Cross-platform compatibility has been improved thanks to changes in WebSocket handling.
The release also contains numerous small fixes.
