The reasons for this included the higher speed of the latter, support for various browsers, rapid updates, and so on. Interestingly, the ability to update the browser independently of Windows became one of the decisive factors.
According to Researchers at Duo have found that the "classic" Edge often lagged behind other browsers in terms of updates. Curiously, the outdated Internet Explorer was one of the most frequently updated products.
Researchers note that in 2018, Microsoft Edge ranked fifth in terms of update delays. Now, it has moved to first place. This is believed to have occurred due to the development of the new Edge, which became the sole focus, while the classic browser is only minimally supported.
Furthermore, the classic Microsoft Edge was tightly integrated into the system and required Windows 10 for installation. The new version is not so closely tied to the OS. It can operate on Windows 10, as well as on Windows 7, 8.1, and even macOS. Thus, using Microsoft Edge based on Chromium automatically expands the browser's ecosystem and allows it to gain new fans.
And although there is currently no information on whether a new version of the browser for Linux is in development, its appearance would be quite expected. Considering Microsoft's interest in open source, this would be a logical step.
