AMD has opened the Caudron framework for rapid 3D application prototyping.

AMD released a new open framework Caudron, providing tools for rapid prototyping of games and graphical applications using the Vulkan or DirectX12 APIs. The framework was initially used internally by the company for developing demonstrations and examples for the SDK. The project code is written in C++11 and is distributed is licensed under the MIT License.

Caudron is presented as a simplified game engine that is easy to learn and can be modified during development for various experiments. The engine is attached to the application as a statically linked library. The engine components are divided into four main categories:

  • Resource managers and loaders. Supports loading textures in formats like DDS, PNG, JPG, etc., with the capability to create image views. Several implementations of buffers are provided to store vertices and indices for both static and dynamically changing geometric objects, as well as for storing textures before loading into video memory;
  • Rendering modules that allow loading and rendering 3D models in the glTF 2.0 format with support for camera movement animation, skeletons and lights, texture overlay, physically-based rendering (PBR), point lights, and shadows. 2D objects can also be rendered in PostProcPS/PS formats using a custom shader in the post-processing stage. A component is also available ImGUI for creating GUI and a set of widgets for constructing a coordinate grid and a wireframe cube (for bounding boxes and light/camera frustum);
  • A set of auxiliary handlers and code for API Vulkan-specific configurations;
  • Standard code for different operating systems for handling scaling operations, windowed and fullscreen modes, message passing between windows, etc.

It also includes additional libraries: AGS for obtaining GPU information, VulkanMemoryAllocator for memory management in Vulkan applications, d3d12x for using the D3D12 API, dxc with the shader compiler for DirectX, imgui with the GUI library, json for data manipulation in JSON format.
