The quad-core Tiger Lake-Y demonstrates high performance in UserBenchmark

Although Intel has yet to release the long-awaited 10nm Ice Lake processors, it is already actively working on their successors—Tiger Lake. One of these processors was spotted by a well-known leak source under the pseudonym KOMACHI ENSAKA in the UserBenchmark performance test database.

To begin with, let’s remember that the release of Tiger Lake processors is expected next year, in 2020. They will be manufactured using a 10nm process and will feature an improved Willow Cove architecture, as well as integrated graphics with Intel Xe architecture. In comparison, Ice Lake processors will utilize the Sunny Cove architecture and 11th generation (Gen11) graphics.

According to benchmark data, an unknown Tiger Lake Core Y-series processor (TGL-Y) was tested. This series includes processors with the lowest power consumption and 'cut-down' specifications, used in compact devices like tablets and hybrid laptops. The fact that the Tiger Lake processor was tested in a compact device is indirectly confirmed by the presence of LPDDDR4x memory, as well as integrated Gen12 LP (Low Powered) graphics.

The tested unknown Tiger Lake-Y processor has four cores and eight threads, with a base frequency of 1.2 GHz and an average Turbo frequency reaching 2.9 GHz, according to the test data. It's worth noting that during testing, according to UserBenchmark, the processor throttled significantly, so its maximum frequencies remain unknown for now. Additionally, it is likely an engineering sample, which generally have lower frequencies than the final versions of processors.

When compared to the current four-core Core i7-8559U from the Coffee Lake generation, the Tiger Lake-Y chip shows just a few percent lower performance in single- and multi-core UserBenchmark tests. Additionally, Tiger Lake-Y outperforms the Ryzen 7 3750H in almost all tests. However, it's important to remember that this benchmark does not have the best reputation, so one should not judge performance solely based on these results.
