Over the years, the Linux operating system has become as quality and reliable as Windows and macOS. However, it still has a fundamental flaw related to the inability to properly handle data when there is insufficient RAM.
On systems with limited RAM, it is common to encounter situations where the OS hangs and does not respond to commands. At this point, it is impossible to close programs or free up memory in other ways. This affects systems with swap disabled and a small amount of RAM — around 4 GB. The issue was recently raised again in community discussions.
Fedora developers in addressing the problem, but so far everything is limited to discussions of potential improvements in the near future. There are currently no specific solutions, although there are suggestions to enhance control over available memory, optimize systemd tools, and run GNOME processes as user system services or refine the OOM Killer to monitor available RAM.
I would like these capabilities to eventually be implemented in the system kernel. However, for now, this is not the case, and it is unclear when any solutions will be realized. At least it is encouraging that the issue is being discussed, and this time, experts from Red Hat have joined the effort. This gives hope for a solution to emerge, even in the relatively distant future.
