🥇 "Fundamentals of Programming" enrollment for a free course with examples in JavaScript

Dear colleagues and future engineers, the Metarhya community is opening enrollment for a free course titled "Fundamentals of Programming," which will be available on youtube and github without any restrictions. Some lectures were recorded at the end of 2018 and the beginning of 2019, while others will be delivered in Kyiv Polytechnic Institute in the autumn of 2019 and will be immediately available on the course channel. The experience from the last five years, when I delivered more complex lectures, has shown the need for lectures for beginners as well. This time, by popular demand from students, I will try to add a lot of materials on the fundamentals of programming and, where possible, abstract the course from JavaScript. Of course, most examples will remain in JavaScript, but the theoretical part will be much broader and will not be limited to the syntax and API of the language. Some examples will be in TypeScript and C++. This is not a course on bare JavaScript but a foundational course on programming basics, covering core concepts and design patterns for various paradigms: functional, procedural, object-oriented, generic, asynchronous, reactive, parallel, multi-paradigm, and metaprogramming, as well as the fundamentals of data structures, testing, and principles for building project structure and architecture.

About the Course

The course is built without the use of external libraries, dependencies, and frameworks; instead, we will try to do everything ourselves, delving into how and why it works. Node.js and the browser will be used as the runtime environment for code examples. This year, the course will be supplemented with practical assignments, which were lacking earlier. To master the development process, techniques for refactoring and optimizing code will be demonstrated, including on code reviews of student tasks. Attention will be given to code style and the use of tools like version control systems and package managers. I have tried to make all examples as close to real projects as possible because you want to become specialists not just in educational examples but in practical programming. Code examples will be available publicly on GitHub in the organization HowProgrammingWorks, links to the code will be under each video and reverse links from the code to the video are available where the video lectures have already been recorded. All lectures are open; you can attend them at KPI and ask questions during seminars after the lectures. Lecture schedule is published immediately but may change slightly.

Exam

In winter, after the 1st semester, course participants will be offered independent assignments to assess their knowledge level, and upon successful completion, you can come for the exam to receive a certificate from Metarhia. My exam is not a university exam with tickets, theory and practice, but a complete exam covering all material, where theory is not detached from practice. There is no room for mere luck here. Not everyone will pass the exam; approximately 1-2 out of 100 participants may receive a certificate. But we study for knowledge, not for certificates. You can only retake the exam after a year. The training is free and open to everyone. More than 1200 people have already registered. The training can last from 1 to 4 years, depending on the student's progress. If someone does not pass the exam, they can continue studying, but I will spend more time with those who have completed it successfully. I will provide more details about the exams closer to the end of the semester; don’t be distracted by this now and avoid unnecessary questions in the groups; focus on mastering the material.

Q: Can I enroll in the course if I am not from KPI, or from another university, or not a student at all, or from another country, or cannot come for the exams, or I am already working, or (… a bunch of other reasons…)?
A: If you are a person from planet Earth - yes, you can. Otherwise, we will not accept your application.

Q: Can I take the exam without attending the course or attend the course without taking the exam?
A: You are incredibly lucky! A promotion! I personally allow you!

Q: I heard there is an advanced group (second year of study); can I attend that as well?
A: Give it a try; the material is more complex there, but if you can handle it, I don't mind if you go there too.

Q: Can exams be taken remotely?
A: No, you must come in person.
