Proton-i branch introduced, translated to newer versions of Wine

Juuso Alasuutari, specializing in sound processing system development for Linux (author jackdbus and LASH), has formed project
Proton-i, aimed at porting the current Proton codebase to newer versions of Wine without waiting for significant new releases from Valve. Currently, a version of Proton based on Wine 4.13, functionally identical to Proton 4.11-2 (the main Proton project uses Wine 4.11).

The primary idea behind Proton-i is to enable the use of patches applied to the fresh versions of Wine (each release includes several hundred changes), which can potentially help in running games that previously encountered issues. It is anticipated that some problems may be resolved in new Wine releases, while others can be addressed by Proton patches. The combination of these fixes potentially allows for higher game performance than using new Wine and Proton separately.

It is worth noting that the Proton project developed by Valve is based on the work of the Wine project and aims to facilitate the running of game applications in Linux that were created for Windows and listed in the Steam catalog. Proton allows users to run game applications designed solely for Windows directly within the Linux Steam client. The package includes implementations of DirectX 9 (based on D9VK), DirectX 10/11 (based on DXVK), and 12 (based on vkd3d), which operate by translating DirectX calls into the Vulkan API. It provides enhanced support for game controllers and the ability to use fullscreen mode independently of the screen resolutions supported by the games. Compared to the original Wine, performance for multithreaded games has significantly improved due to the application of 'esync' (Eventfd Synchronization) patches orfutex/fsync«.
