Release of the composite server Weston 7.0

Published stable release of the composite server Weston 7.0, developing technologies that facilitate full support for the protocol Wayland in Enlightenment, GNOME, KDE, and other desktop environments. The development of Weston aims to provide a high-quality code base and working examples for using Wayland in desktop environments and embedded solutions, such as platforms for automotive infotainment systems, smartphones, televisions, and other consumer devices.

The significant version number change of Weston is due to ABI changes that break compatibility. Changes in the new branch Weston:

  • Added support for technology to prevent illegal copying of content HDCP, which is used to encrypt video signals transmitted through DVI, DisplayPort, HDMI, GVIF, or UDI interfaces. In libweston, a flag has been implemented for calls to weston_output, weston_surface, and weston_head to enable content protection. An example client application for displaying protected content has been added;
  • A plugin for a multimedia server has been added PipeWire, developed to replace PulseAudio and supporting video stream processing in addition to audio. The plugin can be used to organize output to a remote desktop similar to the previously available GStreamer-based output plugin. On the receiving side, any client that supports pipewire can be used for display, including GStreamer (for example, “gst-launch-1.0 pipewiresrc ! video/x-raw,format=BGRx ! …”);
  • Support for the EGL extension has been added in gl-renderer EGL_KHR_partial_update for selective updating of surface content, skipping areas where there were no changes;
  • A new weston_debug framework has been added for debugging and logging events (weston_log_context);
  • New header files libweston-internal.h and backend.h have been added. The former includes functions for working with
    ‘weston_compositor’, ‘weston_plane’, ‘weston_seat’, ‘weston_surface’, ‘weston_spring’, ‘weston_view’, and the latter — ‘weston_output’;
  • Modifications have been made to ensure repeatable builds;
  • Support for the FB_DAMAGE_CLIPS property has been added in compositor-drm. The code for extracting EDID parameters, handling video modes, interacting with the KMS API, working with the framebuffer, and handling states has been moved to separate files;
  • A ‘file stream’ plugin has been added for transferring content from a file;
  • The backends backend-drm,
    backend-headless,
    backend-rdp,
    backend-wayland,
    backend-x11 and
    backend-fbdev have been moved to a separate directory;
  • To optimize PNG images, the package zopflipng based on the compression algorithm zopfli has been utilized.;
  • Support for the xdg_output_unstable_v1 and zwp_linux_explicit_synchronization_v1 extensions has been added. The package version requirements have been increased wayland-protocols (requires 1.18 for building);
  • The transition to the build system has been completed Meson. Support for building with autotools has been discontinued.
