Nearly three years after the release of CUPS 2.2, CUPS 2.3 has been launched, which was delayed by more than a year.
CUPS 2.3 is an important update due to a change in licensing. Apple has decided to re-license the printing server under the Apache 2.0 license. However, due to various Linux-specific utilities that are GPLv2 and not related to Apple, this creates an issue. Therefore, Apple has added an exception to its Apache 2.0 license to allow linking software with GPLv2 software.
CUPS 2.3 also includes security fixes, numerous bug fixes, support for IPP printer presets, a new 'ippeveprinter' utility, and various other enhancements.
