The code for Telegram Open Network and related P2P and blockchain technologies has been published.

Launched a site for testing and opened the source codes of the TON blockchain platform (Telegram Open Network), developed by Telegram Systems LLP since 2017. TON provides a set of technologies that support the functioning of a distributed network for various services based on blockchain and smart contracts. During ICO the project attracted more than $1.7 billion in investments. The source texts include 1,610 files containing about 398 thousand lines of code. The project is written in C++ and is distributed under the GPLv2 license (libraries under LGPLv2).

Besides Blockchain TON also includes a P2P communication system, distributed blockchain storage, and components for hosting services. TON can be seen as a distributed super server designed to host and provide various services based on smart contracts. A cryptocurrency will be launched on the TON platform Gram, which is significantly faster than Bitcoin and Ethereum in transaction confirmation speed (millions of transactions per second instead of tens) and can process payments at the speed of VISA and Mastercard.

The open source code allows participation in testing the project and deploying a personal network node, which is responsible for a specific branch of the blockchain. The node can also function as a validator to confirm transactions on the blockchain. To determine the shortest path between nodes, hypercube-based routing is used. Mining is not supported—all units of the cryptocurrency Gram are generated at once and will be distributed among investors and the stabilization fund.

Key components TON:

  • TON Blockchain is a blockchain platform capable of executing Turing-complete smart contracts, created in the programming language developed for TON Fift and executed in the blockchain using a special TVM virtual machine.Support for updating formal specifications of the blockchain, multichain operations, micropayments, offline payment networks is provided;
  • TON P2P Network is a client-formed P2P network used for accessing TON Blockchain, sending transaction candidates, and receiving updates for parts of the blockchain necessary for the client. The P2P network can also be used for arbitrary distributed services, including those unrelated to the blockchain.
  • TON Storage – A distributed file storage accessible through the TON network, used in the TON Blockchain for storing archives with copies of blocks and data snapshots. The storage is also applicable for hosting arbitrary files from users and services operating on the TON platform. Data retrieval is reminiscent of torrents;
  • TON Proxy – An anonymizing proxy, similar to I2P (Invisible Internet Project), used to hide the locations and addresses of network nodes;
  • TON DHT – A distributed hash table, similar to Kademlia, and used as an analog to a torrent tracker for distributed storage, as well as a means to define entry points for the anonymizing proxy and as a service discovery mechanism;
  • TON Services – A platform for creating arbitrary services (similar to websites and web applications), accessible through the TON Network and TON Proxy. The service interface is formalized and allows interaction in the style of browsers or mobile applications. Interface descriptions and entry points are published in the TON Blockchain, while the nodes providing services are identified through TON DHT. Services can create smart contracts in the TON Blockchain to ensure the fulfillment of certain obligations to clients. Data obtained from users can be stored in TON Storage;
  • TON DNS – A system for assigning names to objects in storage, smart contracts, services, and network nodes. Instead of an IP address, the name is transformed into hashes for the TON DHT;
  • TON Payments – A micropayment platform that can be used for quick fund transfers and payments for services with deferred display in the blockchain;
  • Components for integration with third-party messengers and social media applications, making blockchain technologies and distributed services accessible to ordinary users. One of the first mass applications to support TON is promised to be the Telegram messenger.
