To collaboratively work on porting MATE applications to run on Wayland, developers from the Mir display server and the MATE desktop have joined forces. They have already prepared the snap package mate-wayland, which provides the MATE environment based on Wayland. However, further work is needed to port the end applications for everyday use on Wayland.
Another issue is that many MATE applications depend on X11 bindings, which need to be translated to use fully portable GTK3 code. To engage enthusiasts in the porting process, the Mir developers have prepared a guide detailing how to set up the MATE environment on Wayland and what to pay attention to. The guide also offers typical solutions for replacing the X11 bindings.
