Release of the DNS server KnotDNS 2.8.4

On September 24, 2019, a release entry for the KnotDNS 2.8.4 DNS server appeared on the developer's website. The project is developed by the Czech domain registrar CZ.NIC. KnotDNS is a high-performance DNS server that supports all DNS capabilities. It is written in C and distributed under a license. GPLv3.

To ensure high performance in handling requests, a multithreaded, mostly non-blocking implementation is employed, which is well-scalable on SMP systems.

Features of the server include:

  • on-the-fly zone addition and deletion;
  • zone transfers between servers;
  • DDNS (dynamic updates);
  • NSID (RFC 5001);
  • EDNS0 and DNSSEC extensions (including NSEC3);
  • response rate limiting (RRL)

New features in version 2.8.4 include:

  • automatic loading of DS (Delegation of Signing) records into the parent DNS zone using DDNS;
  • in cases where there are network connection issues, incoming IXFR requests are no longer converted to AXFR;
  • improved verification of missing GR (Glue Record) entries with DNS server addresses defined on the registrar's side.
