Nextcloud and ownCloud allow deploying a full-fledged cloud storage system on their server systems with support for synchronization and data sharing, as well as offering additional features such as video conferencing tools, messaging, and starting from the current release, integration of functions for creating a decentralized social network. The source codes of Nextcloud, like those of ownCloud, is licensed under AGPL.
Nextcloud provides tools for sharing, version control of changes, support for media playback and document viewing directly from the web interface, the ability to synchronize data between different machines, and the ability to view and edit data from any device anywhere on the network. Access to data can be organized either through the web interface or by using the WebDAV protocol and its extensions CardDAV and CalDAV.
Unlike services like Google Drive, Dropbox, Yandex.Disk, and box.net, the projects ownCloud and Nextcloud give users complete control over their data — the information is not tied to external closed cloud storage systems, but hosted on user-controlled equipment. A key difference between Nextcloud and ownCloud is the intention to provide in a single open product all advanced features that were previously only available in the commercial version of ownCloud. The Nextcloud server can be deployed on any hosting that supports the execution of PHP scripts and provides access to SQLite, MariaDB/MySQL, or PostgreSQL.
In the new release:
- A 'Remote wipe' feature has been added, allowing users to clear files on mobile devices and administrators to delete data from all devices of a specified user. This feature can be useful when it is necessary to permit a third party to upload certain files during a project collaboration and then erase them after the cooperation is completed;
- "Nextcloud Text," a self-sufficient text editor with Markdown formatting support and versioning changes, allows for collaborative editing of text without installing advanced editors like Collabora Online and ONLYOFFICE. The editor seamlessly integrates with the video call and chat systems for organizing collaborative work among groups of people on a single document;
- A secure viewing mode for confidential text documents, PDF files, and images has been added, allowing public copies of protected files to be watermarked and hidden from public upload areas based on associated tags. The watermark includes the exact time and user who uploaded the document.
This feature can be used when it is necessary to prevent information leaks (to trace the source of the leak) while keeping the document accessible for review by specific groups; - A two-factor authentication setup option has been implemented after the first login. The administrator is given the ability to generate one-time tokens for emergency access in case the second factor cannot be applied. The second factor supports TOTP (e.g., Google Authenticator), Yubikeys or Nitrokeys, SMS, Telegram, Signal, and backup codes;
- The Outlook add-on provides support for secure mailboxes. To prevent the text of the email from being intercepted, only a notification about a new email with a link and login parameters is sent to the recipient's email, while the text and attachments are only displayed after logging into Nextcloud;
- The ability to work with LDAP in write mode has been added, allowing for user management in LDAP from Nextcloud;
- Integration with IBM Spectrum Scale and Collabora Online Global Scale services has been ensured, and versioning support for S3 has also been added;
- Performance and interface responsiveness have been optimized. The number of server requests during page loading has been reduced, storage write operations have been optimized, and a new event dispatching interface and initial state manager have been introduced (which allows for instant display of certain pages by substituting the results of some initial ajax calls on the backend).
