The Gentoo Linux distribution has turned 20 years old. On October 4, 1999, Daniel Robbins registered the domain gentoo.org and began developing a new distribution, where he, along with Bob Mutch, attempted to transfer some ideas from the FreeBSD project, combining them with the Linux distribution Enoch, which had been under development for about a year, experimenting with a distribution built from source code optimized for specific hardware. A foundational feature of Gentoo was the separation into source-based packages (portage) and a minimal base system needed to compile the main applications of the distribution. The first stable release of Gentoo was made three years later—on March 31, 2002.
