On June 3rd, in the openSUSE mailing list, a certain Stasiek Michalski initiated a discussion regarding the possibility of changing the project's logo and name. Among the reasons he mentioned were the following:
Logo:
- Similarity to the old version of the SUSE logo, which may cause confusion. There is also mention of the need to enter into an agreement between the future openSUSE Foundation and SUSE regarding the right to use the logo.
- The colors of the current logo are too bright and light, making it insufficiently distinct against a light background.
Project Name:
- Contains the abbreviation SUSE, which will also require an agreement (it is noted that an agreement will be necessary in any case, as there is a need to support older releases. However, it is suggested to think about this already and set the direction towards an independent name).
- People find it hard to remember how the name is correctly spelled, where uppercase and lowercase letters are used.
- The FSF is critical of the word "open" in the name (nitpicking regarding "open" and "free").
Voting will take place from October 10th to 31st among project participants who have voting rights. The results will be announced on November 1st.
