Mozilla ends support for search add-ons based on OpenSearch technology

Developers from Mozilla announced the decision to remove from the add-ons catalog for Firefox all add-ons that integrate with search engines using the technology OpenSearch. It is also reported that future support for the XML markup of OpenSearch in Firefox will be discontinued, which allowed websites to define scripts for integrating search engines into the browser's search panel.

OpenSearch-based add-ons will be removed on December 5. Instead of OpenSearch, it is recommended to use the WebExtensions API for creating add-ons that integrate with search engines. In particular, for overriding settings related to search engines, it is advised to use chrome_settings_overrides and the new syntax for describing search engine interfaces, similar to OpenSearch but defined in JSON format rather than XML.
