Google has officially announced the discontinuation of support for its own virtual reality platform, Daydream. Yesterday, the official presentation of the new Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL smartphones took place, which lack support for the Daydream VR platform. Starting today, Google ceases the sale of Daydream View headsets. Moreover, the company does not plan to support the platform in future devices based on Android.
Such a move is unlikely to surprise those who follow the development of virtual reality technologies on mobile devices. Certainly, Google Daydream contributed to the popularity of VR, giving users the opportunity to engage with the virtual world. However, this was not enough, as the entire industry related to virtual reality on mobile devices is not in the best state. Gradually, the focus has shifted towards more quality and effective VR technologies.
"We saw great potential in smartphones with VR, which allow mobile devices to be used anywhere, providing users with an immersive experience. Over time, we noticed clear limitations that prevent VR smartphones from becoming a viable long-term solution. Although we no longer sell Daydream View and do not support the VR platform on the new Pixel smartphones, the Daydream app and store will remain available for existing users," said a Google representative.
