OpenOrienteering Mapper — a free program for drawing and printing sports and other types of maps. The program is essentially a cross-platform cartographic publishing system with the features of a graphic vector WYSIWYG editor and desktop GIS.
The program has desktop (Linux, macOS, Windows) and mobile (Android, Android-x86) versions. Currently, the use of the mobile version is recommended for the initial stages of cartography and field sketching, while responsible cartographic work and preparation for printing is recommended to be done using the desktop version.
OpenOrienteering Mapper v0.9.0 is the first stable release of the 0.9.x branch with a huge number of innovations and changes, which includes a new symbol set corresponding to the international specification for sports maps «IOF ISOM 2017-2».
Key Changes:
NOTE: A list of major changes is provided regarding the previous stable version v0.8.4. The complete list of changes compared to v0.8.0 is available on GitHub.
- A new symbol set has been added «ISOM 2017-2».
- File formats:
- Support for the OCDformat has been significantly improved, including the ability to export up to OCDv12 inclusive, georeferencing, and custom icon symbols.
- Support for layers in the GeoTIFF.
- format has been added, along with the ability to export to different vector geodata formats (supported by the GDAL).
- Tools:
- Tool ‘Edit Objects’ takes into account angles.
- Tool ‘Scale Objects’ can (optionally) scale several objects relative to the original position of each independently.
- Android:
- Customizable button sizes on the toolbar.
- Support for 64-bit architecture.
- Background processes have been optimized.
- ‘Touch Mode’ is available for the desktop version:
- Full-screen editing on devices with touch input or without a keyboard (at least a mouse is required), just like in the mobile version for Android.
- Support for built-in GPS receivers for Windows/macOS/Linux. It should be noted that access to Windows location API requires the presence of .NET Framework 4 and Powershell 2 (included in the package Windows 10).
- Significant updates of third-party components and dependencies (Qt 5.12, PROJ 6, GDAL 3), thus for the operation of Mapper v0.9.0 newer versions of Linux distributions are required ..
Furthermore, a less noticeable but equally significant aspect is the initial stage of the process of integrating automated tests for macOS, Linux and Windows based on the service Azure Pipelines from by Microsoft, which, along with the use of Open Build Service for Linux, now allows for the automatic creation of all release packages. This significantly enhances the ability to release regular updates with confidence in the quality of the build.
“- As usual, I would like to thank the 14 developers who contributed to the development of this version, as well as everyone who helped in finding bugs in the nightly dev builds.”
/ Kai ‘dg0yt’ Pastor, project leader OpenOrienteering /
Currently, the character set ISSprOM 2019 is in development, but is not included in this release for now.
In light of the upcoming release Mapper v1.0, the project participants OpenOrienteering are considering the issue of visual rebranding of the icons and logo.
