GitLab is making changes for cloud and commercial product users

This morning, we received a letter from GitLab, regarding changes to the service agreement. The translation of this letter will be below.

Important Updates to Our Service and Telemetry Agreement

Dear GitLab user!

We have updated our Service Agreement regarding our use of telemetry services.

Existing customers using our proprietary products (the GitLab.com service and Enterprise Edition on their hardware) may notice additional inserts in the js scripts interacting with GitLab and/or third-party telemetry services (e.g., Pendo) starting from version 12.4.

For GitLab.com users: after the update, you will need to accept our new Service Agreement. Access to the web interface and API will be blocked until the new terms are accepted.
This may cause a pause in service through our API for those customers using integration with our API, until the terms are accepted after logging in through the web interface.

For self-hosted users: GitLab Core remains free software. GitLab Community Edition (CE) remains a great option if you want to install GitLab without using proprietary software. It is released under MIT, and will not contain proprietary software. Many open-source projects use GitLab CE for their SCM and CI needs. To reiterate, there will be no changes in GitLab CE.

Key changes:

GitLab.com (the SaaS version of GitLab) and proprietary packages for self-installation (Starter, Premium, and Ultimate) will now include additional inserts in JavaScript scripts (both open-source and proprietary) for interaction with GitLab and possibly with third-party telemetry services (we will use SaaS Pendo.).

We will disclose all options for such use in our privacy policy, including the purposes for which the collected data will be used. We will also ensure that any third-party telemetry service we use meets data protection standards, at least as stringent as those already employed by GitLab, and we will strive for SOC2 compliance. Pendo meets SOC2 standards.

UPD.: GitLab has postponed the implementation of telemetry in its products: Enterprise Edition will not be added (for now?), but in the SaaS service Gitlab.com, users will need to explicitly opt out (by setting Do-Not-Track in their browser for this service). In addition to Pendo, Snowplow will be used.
