Western Digital has announced relatively affordable WD Blue SN500 NVMe SSDs, suitable for use in both desktop and portable computers.

The products comply with the NVM Express (NVMe) specification, which defines access to SSDs via the PCI Express bus (in this case, PCIe Gen3 x2). Compared to SATA solutions, this provides higher read and write speeds, while also reducing latency.
The new models are designed in the M.2 2280 form factor, with dimensions of 22 × 80 mm. They use 3D NAND flash memory chips and a proprietary controller.
The WD Blue SN500 NVMe SSD series includes two models — with capacities of 250 GB and 500 GB. Both have a sequential read speed of up to 1700 MB/s. The sequential write speeds are 1300 MB/s and 1450 MB/s, respectively.

As for the recommended retail price, it is set at 55 USD for the lower capacity model and 78 USD for the higher capacity model.
Thus, the WD Blue SN500 NVMe SSDs are quite affordable SSDs in the NVMe category, said to be suitable for resource-intensive applications and multitasking environments.
