Release Stratis 2.0, the toolkit for managing local storage

After a year of development has been published project release Stratis 2.0, developed by Red Hat and the Fedora community to unify and simplify configuration and management tools for one or more local storage devices. Stratis offers features such as dynamic storage space allocation, snapshots, integrity guarantees, and layer creation for caching. The project code is written in Rust and is distributed under the MPL 2.0 license.

The system largely mirrors the capabilities of advanced management tools like ZFS and Btrfs, but is implemented as a layer (daemon stratisd), working above the device-mapper subsystem of the Linux kernel (using dm-thin, dm-cache, dm-thinpool, dm-raid, and dm-integrity modules) and the XFS filesystem. Unlike ZFS and Btrfs, Stratis components operate only in user space and do not require the loading of specific kernel modules. The project is initially presented as not requiring expert qualifications in storage system administration.

For management, a D-Bus API is provided along with a CLI utility.
Stratis has been tested with block devices based on LUKS (encrypted partitions), mdraid, dm-multipath, iSCSI, LVM logical volumes, as well as various HDDs, SSDs, and NVMe drives. With a single disk in the pool, Stratis allows the use of logical partitions with snapshot support for rollback of changes. When multiple storage devices are added to the pool, logical aggregation of devices into a continuous space becomes possible. Features such as
RAID, data compression, deduplication, and fault tolerance are not yet supported but are planned for the future.

In new release increased requirements for the Rust compiler version (at least 1.37, but 1.38 is recommended). The significant version change is associated with the renaming of some D-Bus interfaces and the redesign of D-Bus interaction (a set of primary fundamental properties has been delineated, while the remaining properties are now requested using the new FetchProperties method).
