The release of Coreboot 4.11 has taken place — a free alternative to proprietary UEFI/BIOS firmware used for the initial hardware initialization before handing control to the 'payload' addition, such as SeaBIOS or GRUB2. Coreboot is very minimalistic and provides extensive embedding options for various additions like the coreinfo utility for detailed system information and the Tetris game, as well as disk OSes: Kolibri, FreeDOS, MichalOS, Memtest, Snowdrop, FloppyBird, and more.
In the new version:
The code for many platforms has been cleaned and unified.
Support for Mediatek 8173 and AMD Picasso 17h (Ryzen) chipsets, as well as RISC-V, has been significantly improved.
Support for vboot (a free alternative to proprietary SecureBoot) has been expanded — initially, it was only available on Chromebooks, but it is now present on other hardware as well.
25 new boards have been added:
AMD Padmelon,
ASUS P5QL-EM,
Emulation QEMU-AARCH64,
Google Akemi / Arcada CML / Damu / Dood / Drallion / Dratini / Jacuzzi / Juniper / Kakadu / Kappa / Puff / Sarien CML / Treeya / Trogdor,
Lenovo R60,
Lenovo T410,
Lenovo Thinkpad T440P,
Lenovo X301,
Razer Blade-Stealth KBL,
Siemens MC-APL6,
Supermicro X11SSH-TF / X11SSM-F.Support for the only supported MIPS board (Google Urara) and the MIPS architecture in general, as well as the AMD Torpedo board and AMD AGESA 12h code, has been removed.
Native initialization of Intel graphics cards in the libgfxinit library has been improved.
The sleep mode on some AMD boards, including Lenovo G505S, has been fixed.
In the near future, many boards that do not support 'relocatable ramstage', 'C bootblock', and platforms using 'Cache as RAM' without a postcar stage are planned to be removed after the release. This jeopardizes many important AMD-based boards, including server ASUS KGPE-D16 — the most powerful server supported by coreboot, also capable of operating without blobs (libreboot). The seriousness of the intentions is evidenced by a number of recent changes on review.coreboot.org, especially. https://review.coreboot.org/c/coreboot/+/36961
