Release of webOS Open Source Edition 2

Introduced new branch of the open platform webOS Open Source Edition 2, focused on equipping smart devices. The platform is evolving in the public repository under the Apache 2.0 license, with development overseen by the community, adhering to a collaborative development management model. The Raspberry Pi 4 boards are considered the reference hardware platform.

The webOS platform was acquired by LG from Hewlett-Packard in 2013 and is used in over 70 million LG televisions and consumer devices. The webOS Open Source Edition project was founded in 2018 after LG attempted to return to an open development model to attract other participants and expand the range of devices on which webOS can be applied.

The webOS system environment is formed using the tools and base packages of OpenEmbedded, as well as the build system and metadata set from the project Yocto. Key components of webOS include the System and Application Manager (SAM) responsible for running applications and services, and the Luna Surface Manager (LSM) that shapes the user interface. The components are written using the Qt framework and the Chromium browser engine.

Rendering is performed through a compositing manager that uses the Wayland protocol. For the development of user applications, it is suggested to use web technologies (CSS, HTML5, and JavaScript) and the Enactframework based on React, though it is also possible to create programs in C and C++ with a Qt-based interface. The user shell and built-in graphical applications are mainly implemented as native programs written using QML technology.

For storing data in a structured form using the JSON format, the storage DB8, which uses LevelDB as its backend, is utilized.
Initialization is done using bootd based on systemd. For handling multimedia content, the uMediaServer and Media Display Controller (MDC) subsystems are provided, with PulseAudio serving as the sound server.

Features webOS Open Source Edition 2:

  • A new reference user interface has been proposed — Home Launcher, optimized for touch screen management and offering an enhanced concept of interchangeable cards (instead of windows). The interface also includes a quick launch panel, where shortcuts for frequently used features like access to settings and notifications are placed;

  • The platform is adapted for use in automotive infotainment systems. For example, it supports operation in environments with dual screens, commonly used in passenger multimedia systems;
  • Tools for automatic firmware updates have been proposed (FOTA — Firmware-Over-the-Air), based on the use of OSTree and atomic system updates. The entire system image is rebuilt entirely, without being divided into separate packages. The update system is based on the use of two system partitions, one of which is active while the other is used for copying the update; after the update is installed, the partitions swap roles;
  • The SoftAP (Tethering) mode has been added, allowing the creation of a wireless access point for connecting other devices to the network;
  • Mandatory access control support based on the Smack kernel module (Simplified Mandatory Access Control Kernel) has been added;
  • Bluetooth and WiFi support has been improved;
  • The reference hardware platform has been upgraded to the Raspberry Pi 4 board (previously, Raspberry Pi 3 Model B was suggested), which can connect two screens via HDMI, utilize a more advanced GPU, support Gigabit Ethernet, dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0/BLE, and USB 3.0;
  • By default, logging is handled by engaged journald from systemd;
  • Updated versions of third-party components underlying the platform, including Qt 5.12 and Chromium 72, have been released.
