According to reports from online sources, more than 480 million mobile VPN applications have been downloaded from digital content stores for Android and iOS platforms over the past 12 months. Compared to the previous similar period, when around 311 million VPN applications were downloaded, there is a notable 54% increase in the popularity of solutions in this category.
Users of Android-based devices downloaded 358.3 million applications, accounting for 75% of total downloads. As for Apple device owners, they downloaded 121.9 million applications. Such a significant discrepancy in volumes should not be surprising, as Android devices have a substantially larger user base.
Surge in popularity VPN-applications is most noticeable in the Asia-Pacific region, where significant political and social upheavals have occurred over the past 12 months. In total, users living in this region downloaded around 188 million mobile VPN applications.
The highest number of VPN applications was downloaded by residents of Indonesia (approximately 75.5 million, which is up 111% compared to the previous similar period). The United States ranks second with 75.6 million application downloads. Rounding out the top three is India (57 million downloads). Notably, India has seen the largest surge in interest in VPN applications, with downloads increasing by 405% during the reporting period. Users from Russia downloaded around 11 million mobile VPN applications over the year. Compared to last year, interest among Russians in such solutions grew by 19%.
It is also worth noting that 84.3% of the total downloads consist of free VPN applications. The program TurboVPN has achieved the highest popularity among users, being downloaded 51.3 million times.
