We continue to deepen our knowledge of salary markets in Russia. The end of 2019 is approaching, which means it's time for the annual report on the salaries that employers have offered in their job postings on 'My Circle'. As in , in this report we will compare salaries offered by employers with salaries from , which provides data directly from specialists. We will compare salaries for major IT specialties and programming languages separately for Moscow, St. Petersburg, and other regions.
Methodological explanation
When calculating salaries offered by employers, we use data from job postings on 'My Circle' for the last six months, from May to October 2019 inclusive. Usually, the salary in job postings is indicated as a range 'from and to'. We took all 'from' salaries, calculated the median, and referred to it as the 'lower boundary of salaries'; we also took all 'to' salaries, calculated the median, and called it the 'upper boundary of salaries'. Only data based on 20 or more job postings was considered reliable.
Salary comparison by major specialties
In Moscow the highest salaries are offered in mobile and desktop development. We observed the same trend last year.
For most specialties, the current median salary falls within the range between the lower and upper salary boundaries set by employers, meaning that job offers are roughly equal to the demand for them.
The exceptions are desktop development and support, where employers offer salaries that exceed the current level, indicating increased demand for such specialists, making it easier for them to find higher-paying jobs now.
In management and design, the median salary for specialists equals the upper boundary of the salary ranges in job postings, indicating reduced demand for such specialists, making it more difficult to find higher-paying jobs currently.
In marketing, the median salary of specialists is above the upper boundary of salaries offered by employers, and this situation has persisted for the second consecutive year.
In St. Petersburg The highest salaries are offered in mobile and backend development. We observed the same trend last year.
For most specialties, the current median salary of specialists falls within the range between the lower and upper salary limits offered by employers.
An exception is testing, where employers offer salaries that are above the current levels.
In the regions the highest salaries are offered in mobile and desktop development. We observed the same trend last year.
For many specialties, we see increased demand from employers: the current median salary of specialists is below the lower salary limit offered by employers.
Current salaries for specialists fall within the salary ranges of vacancies only in backend development, management, analytics, and marketing.
Comparison of salaries by programming languages
In Moscow The highest salaries are offered to developers in Go, as well as in mobile development languages: Kotlin, Swift, Objective-C.
For most programming languages, the current median salary of specialists falls within the salary ranges offered by employers, with job offers roughly matching the demand.
Exceptions are 1C and PHP, where the median salary of specialists equals the upper limit of the salary range in vacancies, meaning the demand for such specialists is lower, making it harder to find higher-paying jobs now.
In St. Petersburg The highest salaries are also offered to developers in Go, mobile development languages, and also to developers in Python.
Increased demand is observed for Kotlin and Python developers; it is currently easier to find a higher-paying job here. Decreased demand is seen for Go and Swift developers, making it harder to find higher-income jobs now.
In the regions The highest salaries among mobile developers are for Objective-C, Swift, Kotlin, as well as Ruby developers.
For all programming languages except Objective-C, we see increased demand for specialists: the current median salary of developers is below the salary ranges offered by employers.
Key observations:
- Moscow salaries are traditionally 10-30% higher than those in St. Petersburg and 20-40% higher than regional salaries.
- Mobile development (Swift, Kotlin, Objective-C) is currently the highest-paying specialization in all regions.
- Go is the highest-paying programming language in Moscow and St. Petersburg.
- We are seeing an increased demand for specialists in almost all IT professions in the regions; it is now easier for them to transition to more lucrative jobs.
- In Moscow, there is a decreased demand for managers, designers, and especially marketers; it is now harder for them to switch to higher-paying jobs.
