The Hyperbola project is supported by the Free Software Foundation completely free distributions, a transition plan to utilize the kernel and user utilities from OpenBSD by porting some components from other BSD systems. The new distribution is planned to be released under the name HyperbolaBSD.
HyperbolaBSD is intended to develop as a full fork of OpenBSD, which will expand with new code supplied under GPLv3 and LGPLv3 licenses. The code developed on top of OpenBSD will aim to gradually replace components of OpenBSD that are distributed under licenses incompatible with GPL. Support for the previously formed Hyperbola GNU/Linux-libre branch will continue until 2022, but future releases of Hyperbola will transition to the new kernel and system elements.
The reason for transitioning to the OpenBSD code base is dissatisfaction with trends in Linux kernel development:
- The incorporation of copyright protection technologies (DRM) into the Linux kernel, such as, support for HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) copyright protection technology.
- initiatives to develop drivers for the Linux kernel in Rust. Hyperbola developers are dissatisfied with the use of the centralized repository Cargo and concerning the freedom to distribute Rust packages. In particular, the conditions for using the Rust and Cargo trademarks prohibit retaining the project name in the event of modifications or applying patches (the package can only be distributed under the names Rust and Cargo if it is built from the original source texts; otherwise, prior written permission from the Rust Core team or a name change is required).
- The development of the Linux kernel without regard for security (Grsecurity while the KSPP Many components of the GNU user environment and system utilities are beginning to impose excessive functionality, without providing options to disable it during assembly. The Hyperbola project is developing according to the KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) principle and aims to provide users with a simple, lightweight, stable, and secure environment. Previously, the distribution was based on stabilized snapshots of the Arch Linux package base, incorporating patches from Debian to enhance stability and security. The initialization system is based on sysvinit with some developments ported from the Devuan and Parabola projects. The support period for releases is 5 years.
