Ampere Computing has announced the 7nm next-generation ARM processor QuickSilver, designed for cloud systems. The new chip features 80 cores based on the latest Neoverse N1 microarchitecture, over 128 PCIe 4.0 lanes, and an eight-channel DDR4 memory controller supporting modules with frequencies exceeding 2666 MHz. Additionally, with CCIX support, it enables the creation of dual-processor platforms. Together, all this should allow the new chip to compete effectively in the cloud against x86 solutions. However, QuickSilver also faces a worthy cloud ARM competitor — the Graviton2 processor from Amazon AWS.
