Support for Windows 7 will end on January 14. This means that no more patches or security updates will be released for the operating system. To avoid security issues, users of the outdated platform are advised to upgrade to the latest versions of Microsoft OS.
The Windows 7 operating system was released on October 22, 2009, and quickly gained a leading position among the number of users worldwide. According to StatCounter statistics for the Windows desktop operating system market, the current share of Windows 7 is 26.8%. Despite the decreasing user base each month, the OS continues to be in high demand in the market.
The main reason for the enduring popularity of Windows 7 lies in the corporate segment, which is traditionally more reluctant to adopt new software platforms, experts believe. Specifically for companies still using Windows 7 in their IT infrastructure, Microsoft paid updates through the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program.
The first year of service under the ESU will cost $25 per device. The cost for the second year will be $50, and for the third year $100. Updates under the program will be provided until January 2023 inclusive. It's important to note that these prices are for organizations that own a Windows Enterprise license. For Windows Pro users, the prices are even higher—$50, $100, and $200 for the first, second, and third years of service, respectively. With this pricing strategy, the software giant aims to encourage businesses to transition to Windows 10.
