Tails is an operating system that can be run on almost any computer using a USB stick or DVD. It is designed to preserve your privacy and anonymity and helps you achieve that.

This release fixes multiple vulnerabilitiesissues. You should update as soon as possible.

Improvements to automatic updates

We have worked on significant improvements to the automatic update feature, which still
causes headaches when using Tails.

Until now, if your version of Tails was several months outdated, you
sometimes had to perform two or more updates in succession.
For example, to update from Tails 3.12 to Tails 3.16, you first needed to update
to Tails 3.14.

Starting from version 4.2, you will be able to update directly to the latest version.

Until now, you could only perform a limited number of automatic updates,
after which you had to do a much more complicated manual update..

Starting from 4.2, you will need to perform updates manually only between major versions,
for example, to update to Tails 5.0 in 2021.

Automatic updates use less memory.
The size of downloaded automatic updates has been slightly optimized.

New features

We have added several command-line utilities that users can use
SecureDrop to analyze metadata from compromised documents on computers
that cannot use the built-in Additional Software:
- PDF Redact Tools to edit and remove metadata from text documents before
  publication.
- Tesseract OCR for converting images containing text into text documents.
- FFmpeg for recording and converting audio and video.

Changes and updates

The built-in translator has gained support for Basque and Galician languages. Tor Browser up to 9.0.3.
Updated Thunderbird up to 68.3.0.
Updated Linux to 5.3.15.
