Microsoft is currently developing a new OS, Windows 10X, for devices with two standard screens or one flexible screen. This includes the Surface Neo, Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold, Dell Duet, and Ori. The release is expected by summer, and according to the latest information, substantial changes in the design.
This specifically concerns the File Explorer. The file manager has seen little change since Windows 95, although it has gained a 'ribbon' interface. However, there are no tabs or dual panels in it. Therefore, in the new 'ten', File Explorer and Control Panel will be updated. Although, for now, these are early versions that may change by the time of release.
At CES 2020, a version of Windows 10X for tablets was showcased on the ThinkPad X1 Fold, featuring updates to the file manager, settings panel, notification panel, and the Start menu. The latter resembles a GNOME implementation. File Explorer is a ported version of its counterpart from Windows 10 Mobile with minor changes.
The Start menu in the new version is devoid of 'tiles', and the default icon is gray. It turns blue when clicked. The menu pins not just applications but also a web search feature. Another addition is gesture support, which has long existed on smartphones.
For instance, swiping up from the bottom button of the screen opens the Start menu, while swiping from right to left brings up the Quick Actions menu, replacing the Action Center. Here, users can toggle network communications, activate flight mode, and more.
